Empowering girls to build resilient futures in the face of climate change.
As climate change accelerates, our rural farming communities in Kenya grapple with catastrophic droughts and floods. Women and girls bear the greatest burden, facing increased risks and challenges that threaten their health, education, and futures.
Kakenya’s Dream addresses these challenges head-on by integrating environmental education into the curriculum at our schools and launching community-wide conservation and climate resilience initiatives.
A Disproportionate Burden on Women and Girls
Across the world, women and girls spend an estimated 200 million hours every day collecting water—three times more than men and boys. In nearly 80% of households without direct water access, women and girls are the primary water collectors. The situation is no different in the communities we serve. Worsening droughts are drying up communal water sources, forcing women and girls to travel further to find water, leaving less time for education, work, and play.
Sadly, girls’ education is often the first thing families sacrifice when faced with the impacts of a climate crisis.
Girls are pulled out of school to take on more of the domestic responsibilities, and when families lose their farms and livestock completely, the economic strain often leads to higher child marriage rates, as families use their daughter’s bride price to cope with financial hardships.

OUR APPROACH
Empowering Girls Through Environmental Education
Women and girls are not just victims of the climate crisis but powerful agents of change, uniquely positioned to lead and innovate solutions. At Kakenya’s Dream, we equip them with the knowledge and tools to combat climate change and build resilience in their communities. Through our programs, girls learn:
Biodiversity Conservation
Emphasizing the importance of preserving ecosystems and increasing forest cover.
Sustainable Agriculture Techniques
To promote water and food security, girls are educated on drought-resistant crops, organic soil management, and sustainable water harvesting, storage, and management methods.
Alternative & Renewable Fuel Sources
To reduce dependency on firewood and combat deforestation.
A Holistic Approach to Climate Resilience
Kakenya’s Dream recognizes the need for systemic change to address the climate crisis. Our program aims to:
Alleviate the time and labor burdens placed on women and girls.
Promote adaptive agriculture and sustainable practices.
Advocate for girls’ education as a critical tool for community resilience.
