Kakenya’s Dream commemorated this year’s global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence with community-focused events that brought together hundreds of local residents from across Trans Mara.
To deepen awareness and encourage dialogue on this important issue, we paired community sensitization efforts with youth-centered sporting activities. The inclusion of sports was a deliberate strategy, as athletic events in the communities we serve draw broad participation, especially from men and boys, creating a meaningful opportunity to raise awareness about gender-based violence. While connecting through friendly competition and teamwork, participants also absorbed critical information about advancing gender equity. Four teams from each sub-county in Trans Mara participated, with winners receiving trophies and gifts sponsored by Kakenya’s Dream.
The events, held in Osinoni in Trans Mara West and Oloonkolin in Transmara South, also provided an important platform for local leadership. Assistant Chief Eunice Leina of Ntulele sub-location, Assistant Chief Sammy Kurao of Osinoni, along with Elder Simion Olemasi Mara, emphasized the collective role community members must play in protecting girls and rejecting violence, discrimination, and common harmful practices like child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM).
Through intentional outreach, open dialogue, and strategic community involvement, Kakenya’s Dream reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the rights and wellbeing of girls across rural Kenya. As Trans Mara cheered on its young athletes, one message rang loud and clear; the future belongs to empowered girls, and together we must protect it.
